Rock wall climbing holds in detail

These are the holds a rock wall is built from. Each grip has a countersunk bore for a two inch bolt, which passes through the plywood panel into a weld nut on the back and pulls the hold flat against the face. Nothing about the system is proprietary: standard hardware, standard spacing, and routes you can rearrange whenever the kids outgrow them.

Shape is what separates the sets. The multi-size packs mix wide pinch pads, fist-sized jugs and smaller crimps so one wall serves a toddler and an advanced climber of nine. The single-shape sets are cheaper per hold and read cleanly as a color-coded route. The large playground pegs are the ones to buy for little hands that grab with a whole palm.

Color is not decoration here. A child who cannot yet read follows green to the top and comes down on orange, and that is a route. Sets of ten colors let you lay out four separate problems on a four by eight panel; a bright single-color set is better as a second layer over an existing wall.

What the sets have in common

  • Molded plastic resin with a textured face, rated to 230 lb per hold
  • Two inch bolts, washers and weld nuts in the box, for plywood up to 1-1/4 in
  • Bolt-on mounting — the panel is drilled once and the layout changes freely
  • Indoor playrooms and outdoor play sets both, the resin takes weather

Planning the layout

  • Four by four panel: twenty holds, two routes, grips a hand-width apart at the bottom
  • Four by eight panel: thirty two holds and room for a traverse along the base
  • Drill more weld nuts than you own holds — spare bores cost nothing and buy you years
  • Keep the first eighteen inches dense so a small child can start without a boost

Colors move at different speeds — please check stock on the listing, since a set that is ready today can slip two weeks within a season.

Questions about this shelf

Will these fit a wall I already built?

If the bores take a standard two inch bolt and your weld nuts are the usual size, yes. Measure one existing hold before you mix brands on the same panel.

How thick should the plywood be?

The hardware that comes with these sets is sized for panels up to 1-1/4 in. Three quarter inch plywood on studs is the common build and leaves the bolt fully seated.

Can the same holds go on a fence outside?

Yes, with the same caution as any wall: bolt into something structural, not into a single fence board, and keep the ground under the traverse soft.
