TOPNEW tree climbing holds and ninja kits for kids in detail

Strap-on kits exist for one reason: a living tree should not be bolted. Each hold sits on a strap that wraps the trunk and tightens with a ratchet, so the load spreads across the bark instead of concentrating on a lag screw. When the children outgrow the route, or the tree grows into the straps, you loosen everything and move it.

A kit is sold as holds plus straps, and the ratio matters more than the hold count. Six straps carrying twelve grips give you two holds per wrap and a comfortable ladder up one face of the trunk. Twenty or twenty one holds on the same six straps build a route that spirals, which is the version older kids ask for.

Re-tension is the maintenance. Straps settle in the first week and after heavy rain, and a ratchet takes five seconds. Check them every few weeks through the season, look at the bark where the strap bears, and move the wrap a few inches up or down each year.

What is in a trunk kit

  • Molded resin holds with the same textured face as the wall sets
  • Ratchet straps instead of bolts — no hole in the tree, no hardware to lose
  • Twelve to twenty one grips per kit, carried on six straps
  • Colors from classic red and black through neon and full rainbow spreads

Setting a trunk route

  • Pick a trunk at least ten inches across with no loose bark
  • Start the lowest hold low enough that a child can reach it from the ground
  • Stagger left and right so the climb is a ladder, not a pole hug
  • Re-tension every strap after the first week, then once a month

Strap kits go in and out of stock by colorway; please read the listing before you plan a build weekend, as restocks run a couple of weeks.

Questions about this shelf

Do the straps damage the tree?

A wide strap tensioned by hand spreads the load and does not cut bark the way a screw does. Move each wrap a little every season so nothing grows around it.

How big a tree does a kit need?

Ten inches of trunk diameter is a sensible floor, and the straps supplied will wrap well past that. A thin trunk flexes under a climbing child and the route feels wrong.

Can these holds also bolt onto a panel?

The grips are the same family, but buy the bolt-on set if the destination is plywood — the trunk kits ship with straps and no bolts.
